Well, I’m going to share with you my experience. So my
daughter who is now 14 years old, was finishing 5th grade and
getting ready to start middle school. She was going through changes when the
biggest change came in, yes her monthly friend. She was now going to start
feeling hormones and seeing new things in middle school. As we all know, this
is the turning point for a lot of kids. I was accused plenty of times of
keeping my kids “in a bubble” but, I always felt like they have the rest of
their lives to grow up and innocence is such a beautiful thing. My husband
approached me one day and said, “I think it’s time to tell her”, and I knew it
was the right time, since she was so naïve to many things and I didn’t want her
to enter middle school and tell other kids that Santa Clause, Easter Bunny,
Christmas Elves and the Tooth Fairy were all real. I was setting her up for
possible bullying if I sent her off with this notion. She was 11 and the time
had come. We sat her down and gave it to her. Her comment to us in a sarcastic
tone was, “all my childhood has been a lie”, LOL! We told her you’re going to
be alright we promise, just think of all those fun years you had filled with
imagination. And, we added, “oh yeah and don’t tell your sisters”, LOL! I have
friends whose kids are teenagers and they still believe, so I guess the perfect
time is when you as a parent decide is a perfect time. No one knows your kids
better than you.
